OpenAI's ChatGPT has become the fastest app in history to reach 1 billion monthly active users, hitting the milestone in May, roughly three years after its November 2022 launch. The surge comes amid fierce competition, with Anthropic's Claude growing far faster in percentage terms and both companies now moving toward public markets.

A Milestone Like No Other

OpenAI's ChatGPT has reached 1 billion global monthly active app users, becoming the fastest application in history to hit the milestone, according to estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. The AI chatbot achieved the feat in May, roughly three years after its November 2022 launch, surpassing the pace set by household names such as Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

The trajectory has been remarkably steep from the very start. The app reached 1 million users within five days of launch and 100 million monthly active users within two months. OpenAI announced in February 2026 that ChatGPT had reached 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers, underlining how a research preview turned into one of the most widely used pieces of software on the planet.

A Race Toward Dominance

The milestone arrives amid intensifying competition in the AI market. Anthropic's Claude, ChatGPT's closest rival, had 56 million global monthly active app users as of the second quarter to date. While that is a fraction of ChatGPT's reach, Claude's year-over-year growth of approximately 640 per cent far outpaces ChatGPT's 62 per cent growth rate over the same period.

There are early signs of genuine head-to-head competition for attention. Sensor Tower found that US ChatGPT users who installed the Claude app in the first quarter of 2026 spent 5 per cent less time on ChatGPT one month after installation, compared with their average usage in the prior eight months. It is a small number, but it hints at a market where users are increasingly willing to try more than one assistant.

IPO Ambitions

Both companies are now moving toward public markets. Anthropic confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering, while OpenAI is also reported to be preparing to file for an IPO in the coming weeks. The dual march toward listing signals a new phase for the industry, in which the leading AI labs face the scrutiny, disclosure, and expectations that come with being publicly traded.

Why It Matters

Reaching a billion monthly users places ChatGPT in rare company among consumer technologies, and it does so faster than anything before it. For everyday users, the story is less about the headline number and more about what it represents: AI assistants have crossed from novelty into routine. The competitive pressure from fast-growing rivals like Claude is likely to accelerate innovation, push prices around, and shape how these tools fit into work and daily life for years to come.
