Chinese AI startup Moonshot, maker of the Kimi chatbot, is closing a $2 billion funding round at a post-money valuation above $20 billion. The deal makes Moonshot the most heavily funded large language model startup in China, with cumulative funding now exceeding $5.2 billion.

A Stunning Valuation Climb

Moonshot AI, the Chinese startup behind the Kimi chatbot, is closing a $2 billion funding round that pushes its post-money valuation above $20 billion. The deal, led by Meituan affiliate Meituan Longzhu, marks the fastest valuation climb amongst China's large-model startups, representing a more than fourfold increase from roughly $4.3 billion just six months prior.

Meituan Longzhu alone is investing more than $200 million in the round, with China Mobile and CPE among the other participants. Including three prior rounds closed in January and February 2026, totalling $500 million, $700 million, and another $700 million respectively, Moonshot has raised more than $3.9 billion in under six months.

Most-Funded LLM Startup in China

The company's cumulative funding now exceeds 37.6 billion yuan, approximately $5.2 billion, surpassing both MiniMax and Zhipu AI to become the most heavily funded large-language-model startup in China. MiniMax had raised roughly 15 billion yuan including IPO proceeds, whilst Zhipu stood at around 13 billion yuan.

Revenue Surge Powers the Valuation

The fundraising momentum reflects a sharp upturn in Moonshot's commercial trajectory. Kimi's annual recurring revenue crossed $100 million in early March and surpassed $200 million in April, driven by both paid subscriptions and accelerating API usage. The revenue inflection followed the January 2026 release of the K2.5 model, which added vision capabilities and agent-group functionality. Kimi's revenue in roughly 20 days after the K2.5 launch exceeded its entire 2025 total. Overseas revenue has overtaken domestic income for the first time.

From Crisis to Comeback

The current surge follows a difficult stretch. When the company released its K1.5 reasoning model on 20 January 2025, DeepSeek launched and open-sourced DeepSeek-R1 on the same day, capturing the market's attention. In response, founder Yang Zhilin refocused the company on achieving state-of-the-art benchmark performance, slashed consumer advertising, and pivoted towards open-source distribution. The latest model, K2.6, was released and open-sourced on 20 April, supporting up to 300 sub-agents collaborating in parallel.

At its current valuation of roughly 140 billion yuan, Moonshot remains cheaper than its publicly traded peers, with MiniMax's market capitalisation sitting at around 210 billion yuan and Zhipu's at approximately 347 billion yuan.
