Amazon has officially begun delivering parcels by drone in Darlington, County Durham, becoming the first retailer to operate a drone delivery service in the United Kingdom. The launch, confirmed on 6 May 2026, makes the north-east England town the only location outside the United States where Amazon operates its Prime Air service. How the Service Works
The service uses Amazon's MK30 drone, which can deliver packages weighing up to five pounds to eligible Prime customers within two hours of ordering. The unmanned aircraft operate within a 12-kilometre radius of Amazon's fulfilment centre at Symmetry Park, dropping parcels directly into customers' gardens. The drones can complete up to 100 deliveries per day, coordinating flights with air traffic controllers at nearby Teesside International Airport. Regulatory Framework and Limitations
Amazon has received Civil Aviation Authority approval to conduct trials until the end of 2026. The company has also secured temporary protected airspace, which is required for autonomous drone operations under current UK regulations, though that permission is only valid until mid-June with the possibility of extension.Darlington Borough Council granted provisional planning permission for the project. A Long Road to Launch
The rollout comes well behind Amazon's original schedule. The company announced in 2023 that drone deliveries would begin in the UK and Italy by the end of 2024. Amazon subsequently abandoned its Italian plans, citing airspace restrictions, and spent much of 2025 securing planning permission and CAA authorisation for the Darlington site.
