Elon Musk's xAI has reportedly entered into discussions with French AI powerhouse Mistral and coding platform Cursor over a potential three-way collaboration. The talks, first reported by Business Insider, emerge on the heels of a blockbuster announcement from SpaceX giving it the option to acquire Cursor for a staggering $60 billion. This flurry of activity underscores Musk's determination to close the competitive gap with Anthropic and OpenAI, particularly in the fast-growing domain of AI-powered software development.

Complementary Strengths

The rationale behind the proposed partnership lies in combining three distinct capabilities. Mistral brings frontier model architecture honed under tight compute constraints. Cursor offers a beloved developer-facing coding tool with deep distribution among software engineers. xAI contributes its massive Colossus supercomputer, one of the largest inference infrastructures ever assembled. Musk himself recently admitted that Grok, xAI's chatbot, is lagging in coding, making the strategic case for tapping outside expertise particularly clear.

Deepening Ties Across the Trio

The relationships between the three parties have been quietly intensifying. On April 14, reports surfaced that xAI was already supplying Cursor with tens of thousands of GPUs to train Cursor's latest model, Composer 2.5. Just over a week later, SpaceX formalised the arrangement with $10 billion in joint development funding plus the acquisition option. Meanwhile, a key engineer who helped train Mistral's early models joined xAI in March to work on what Musk describes as building superintelligence.

The Competitive Backdrop

Cursor has become one of the hottest properties in AI. The company recently hit $1 billion in annual recurring revenue and is reportedly raising fresh capital at a valuation north of $50 billion. Compute has been its primary bottleneck, which is precisely what xAI's infrastructure solves. Mistral, backed by ASML and Nvidia, adds European model expertise and recently raised $830 million in debt financing to expand its own data centre footprint.
