Perplexity has begun rolling out Personal Computer, an AI assistant that integrates with macOS to manage local files, native apps, and web browsing continuously. The feature is available to Perplexity Max subscribers at $200 per month, following its initial unveiling in March.

Perplexity has officially launched Personal Computer, a cloud-based AI agent designed to run on Mac hardware and operate continuously in the background. The rollout, which began this week, marks a significant step in the company's ambition to redefine what an operating system can do in the age of artificial intelligence.

What Personal Computer Does

Designed to run on a dedicated Mac, particularly a Mac mini, Personal Computer can search, read, and write files locally whilst interacting with native macOS applications including iMessage, Apple Mail, and Calendar. Users can initiate tasks remotely from an iPhone, with two-factor authentication securing the connection. The system draws on roughly 20 frontier AI models, routing each task to whichever model is best suited for the job.

Safety and Control

Built-in safeguards include a kill switch for immediate shutdown, mandatory user confirmation for sensitive actions, and an integrated audit trail that lets users review what the agent has done. These guardrails reflect growing industry awareness that autonomous agents operating on personal devices need transparent oversight to earn user trust.

A New Vision for Computing

At the company's inaugural Ask developer conference in March, CEO Aravind Srinivas framed the product around a fundamental shift. A traditional operating system processes commands, he argued, whilst an AI operating system focuses on goals. Personal Computer is the first concrete expression of that philosophy, integrating with the existing Perplexity Mac App for secure orchestration across files, apps, and the browser.

Pricing and Competition

Access requires Perplexity Max, the company's top-tier subscription priced at $200 per month. The cheaper $20 Pro plan supports the cloud-based Perplexity Computer launched earlier this year, but not the new Mac-resident agent. Enterprise versions are reportedly planned. The launch puts Perplexity in direct competition with a wave of agentic AI products from rival labs, all racing to make autonomous assistants that genuinely take action rather than simply answering questions.
